What if an employee doesn't use all of their allowance?

The reimbursement is always the lesser of the two: the health insurance premium or the benefit allowance. Two scenarios:

  • Premium is less than the allowance — the employee gets reimbursed for the full cost of their premium. Simple.
  • Premium is more than the allowance — the employee receives the full allowance, and they cover the remaining balance out of pocket.
